FAQs

I've never tried yoga before, how do I start?

The best way to learn yoga is by doing it. Talk to a yoga teacher about their beginner's class ;  all classes will place importance on breathing, safe postures and relaxation.

There are many styles of yoga. What kind of yoga should I start with?

Hatha yoga is the foundation for all yoga 'styles' and refers to any practice that combines asana (poses), pranayama (breathing) and meditation (relaxation). Here is an outline of some of the Yoga Lineages we know today.

Do I need to lose weight first?

No! Yoga can help you get to your right weight. Nor do you need to be flexible to practice yoga but you will become flexible!

Do I need special equipment for yoga practice?

Wear loose, comfortable clothing and practice on a mat or rug to cushion you from the ground.

What if I can’t do all the poses?

As a physical practice, there are many variations to each pose that will suit nearly all body types. What you can do may even surprise you!

How do I know whether I'm doing it right?

Each pose invites comfort with each breath. If a pose hurts, return to a neutral posture. An experienced instructor will help with adjustments to the pose.

I have a health condition. Can I practice yoga?

Many practice yoga as an approach to dealing with their health concerns. Talk to your doctor and yoga instructor to see how best to proceed.

Are yoga poses safe?

Yoga is safe if approached with safety. Yoga isn't competitive. It's a practice that focuses on self-improvement and mental acuity, not achievement. Santosha (contentment) in practical terms can mean 'do want you can, not what others can.'

How frequently should I practice yoga?

Daily practice of 20-30 minutes of self-practice is safe and beneficial for all. Your yoga instructor will suggest what's best for you.
