Chakras and Energy Distribution
What Does the Chakra Model Do?
Just as blood must flow smoothly and in balance throughout the body, Yoga and Ayurveda philosophy suggest that the body's energy system, known as prana, must also flow freely and remain balanced.
Where Energy Comes From
Ayurveda perceives all human experience as information. The food we ingest carries biochemical information (energy), while the sights, sounds, and touches we experience are similarly translated into biochemical processes within our bodies. Modern science recognises these processes as electrical impulses, whereas ancient models viewed them as life energy.
Distribution
The Chakras play a vital role in maintaining the free flow of prana (life energy) within our bodies. They help distribute this energy internally within the subtle body (comprising the mind, intellect, ego, and energetic aspects) and the gross body (physical body). Just as our experiences influence our beliefs, values, and attitudes (our subtle body), they also affect the actions we take with our gross body.
Ultimately, our ‘mind’ drives our body, channelling energy and guiding our actions.
Summary
The Chakra Model describes centres from where life energy is distributed throughout our body. In this sense, the chakras (like nerve plexuses) can be thought of as distribution boxes that organise and channel electricity to different parts of a house.
Endnote: Some simplification is necessary when bridging ancient models and modern scientific concepts to make the Chakra Model more accessible and relatable.
